Hungary will not ease restrictions on tobacco imports from Romania and Bulgaria after the two countries join the EU in January, the customs authority (VPOP) said yesterday.

All citizens over 17 are entitled to bring 200 cigarettes into the country tax-free, with excise duty levied on amounts above that. Tobacco is much cheaper in Romania and Bulgaria than in Hungary due to lower tax burdens.
