Supervisors Enlarged Anti-Tobacco Legislation

Supervisors from San Francisco decided to purpose a new legislation which will fortify the city's rules against smoking in public places.

This new ordinance, was introduced by Supervisor Eric Mar. His legislation was approbated this afternoon by a 100 votes, but only after few improvements which was made in recent weeks, aimed to quit tobacco businesses.

Mar declared that it was a heavy, lengthy campaign, but required decisive measure will protect thousands of San Franciscans from the dangers of secondhand smoke.

The new legislation will prohibit smoking in outdoor restaurant, dining areas, enclosed public areas of multi-unit lodging, farmers markets, homeless shelters and even where is playing bingo games.

It also bans smoking in service expectant areas, such as spectacles, movie theaters, sporting events, taxis and bus stop shelters, and within 15 feet of business doorways.

However, smoking is still allowed in private homes and on city avenues and in existing bars that have semi-enclosed outdoor smoking areas. But smoking cigarettes inside bars is already prohibited under state law.

Current city law already prohibits smoking in city buildings, businesses, schools, hospitals and public transit.

Dr. Mitch Katz, director of the city's public health department, declared that other countries which have accepted a similar law has seen a decrease in deaths because heart disease.

"So by approving this new ordinance, you are all protecting your health and saving your lives," he added.

Karen Licavoli of Breathe California, one of the anti-tobacco groups working on this new anti-smoking method, admitted that some accesses had been made to local businesses, but explained that there's still is need for more protections there.

"It's what we can do; it's a political reality," she added.

According to Licavoli, approving this new measure will be probable accused and not accepted especially by smokers. However the main purpose of this new anti-smoking legislation is to modify smoking behavior.

"We're not trying to be smoking police, we're just attempting to set another norm around what are intend smoking areas," Licavoli explained.
