Non-smoking ordinance reaches Germany

Germans were among those luckiest nations, because even in UK, Spain, Italy and Ireland ban was enforced with power and enthusiasm, Germans continued to smoke up freely in restaurants and bars.

The deadline for smokers’ joy was on January 1, the date when Germany officially joined the international anti-smoking campaign.

Ban for Germans is an innovation that on the one hand met strong opposition, but from another hand encouragement and satisfaction.

As a defense reaction, some locals businesses have projected their businesses creating areas for smokers.

For example, Barbara Palm has changed name and way of business. Now, it is called Private Smokers' Club, and every visitor has a membership ticket. You ought to ring the doorbell to get inside where everybody holds a cigarette and discuss.

“Ninety-five percent of my guests are smokers and I live off them,” Palm says. “With this law, the government is taking away our livelihoods. If I just have 5 percent of my guests left, the non-smokers, I can't even pay my rent.”

“There's one bar where it's allowed to smoke and, normally, it's a little ugly bar and was not very well visited - but right now it's full of people,” Simon Stettner said, puffing away cigarette smoke.

Now, in Germany, offenders caught smoking in public places can face fine. Owners of small bars and proprietors of restaurants are those who worry the most as for many businesses selling tobacco products or permit inside smoking constitutes a big part of their revenue.
